Bata Drums
Oru Seco and other toques for a percusionist

Diego Gosiker

The bata drums, once used solely for religious ceremonies, have gradually crossed over to other genres and can now be heard in Yoruba songs, Rumba & Salsa bands, as well as Latin Jazz bands.
Many percussionists are currently drawn to the challenge of mastering the drums due to their sound, mysticism, difficulty and the highly complex polyrhythms.
This guide provides the necessary elements for percussionist to approach the 3 bata drums in a friendly and easy manner. It includes different bata salutes called “toques” such as “Oru Seco” and “Oru Cantado”.
The method used to write the “toques” is simple and practical, using one line for each hand and a different symbol for each drum.
This presentation includes a CD with video clips and audio tracks of each “toque”, as written, enabling the reader to clearly appreciate the movements and melodies of each hand and drum.
